Site Engagement Metrics

Prev Next

Insider One gives you several ways to measure and act on how visitors engage with your website. The Bounce custom goal reports campaign-attributed bounce rate, user rules react to time spent, and Page Behavior rules react to scrolling. Each capability answers a different question, so this article explains what each one measures, how it works, and which one fits your goal.

Insider One focuses these signals on campaign measurement and real-time personalization. For site-wide reports such as average engagement time, scroll-depth distribution, or page-level dwell time, use your web analytics platform alongside Insider One.

Requirements:

  • The Bounce goal needs a web campaign that appears on the visitor’s landing page.

  • Time and scroll rules depend on your website mapping, which is configured during the Insider Tag integration. For full coverage, implement the Insider Web SDK.

Measure bounce rate

The Bounce custom goal measures visitors who leave without interacting after they see your campaign. It helps you compare how a campaign variation and its control group affect exits. A lower bounce rate generally indicates the better result in that comparison.

To measure bounce rate, add the Bounce goal to a web campaign. For setup details, see Custom Goal Types.

Insider One counts a bounce when a visitor leaves the page without interacting with it or visiting another page after viewing the campaign. The goal counts only when the campaign appears on the landing page and receives an impression. If the campaign appears on any other page type, Insider One does not count the Bounce goal.

Insider One calculates bounce rate with this formula:

Bounce rate = (sessions that leave without interaction / total sessions) x 100

In campaign analytics, the number of bounces appears as conversions, and the conversion rate appears as the bounce rate.

Target visitors by time spent

The Time Spent on Site user rule lets you show a campaign after a visitor spends a set amount of time on selected pages or on pages that match a rule. For example, you can display a campaign after a visitor spends 30 seconds in a selected part of your website.

Time Spent on Site - is - {ruleName} - {30 seconds}

The timer adds up total time and does not reset on each landing. Time keeps accumulating while the visitor is idle or viewing another browser tab, as long as the original page stays open.

To target time spent on a single URL, use the Page-Based Time Showing rule. This rule is available for OnSite and Architect campaigns.

Page Based Time Showing - is - example.com/new-arrivals - {30 seconds}

Use these rules to deliver an experience at the right moment. For active-attention or precise dwell-time analysis, use your web analytics platform. For all user rule options, see User Rules.

Trigger campaigns by scroll behavior

Page Behavior rules let you trigger a campaign when a visitor reaches a scroll position or completes a scroll sequence. Page Behavior rules are available for on-page web templates. The available conditions are:

  • Scroll Down (px): triggers after a set number of pixels

  • Scroll Down (%): triggers after a set percentage of the page

  • Scroll Down (%) then Up (px): triggers after a visitor scrolls down by a percentage and then back up by a number of pixels

  • Scroll Down (%) then go to top: triggers after a visitor scrolls down by a percentage and then returns to the top

  • Reach to Certain Element: triggers when a visitor reaches a selected page element, such as #footer

For example, you can display a feedback campaign when a visitor reaches 75% of a page, or show an offer when they reach a specific element.

Scroll rules check whether a visitor meets the condition you configure. For scroll-depth distributions or an average scroll depth across your site, use your web analytics platform. For all Page Behavior options, see Page Behavior.

Understand session duration

Website session duration comes from your web analytics platform, which reports it across your whole site. Insider One reports Average Session Duration for mobile app sessions in Mobile App Suite analytics. A mobile app session starts when a user opens the app and ends when the user closes the app or moves it to the background. For details, see Mobile App Suite Home Page Analytics.
