How does Cookie-Free Insider Tag Work?

Cookies are small text files stored on a customer's device. They primarily track users and collect information on their activities across devices. However, as demand for privacy grows, users want control over how their personal data is used. In addition, new regulations limit placing cookies and similar technologies on organizations' websites without users' consent.

With Cookie-Free Insider Tag, you can show your campaigns to all visitors, regardless of their cookie acceptance status. With the Cookie-Free Insider Tag, campaigns will trigger even if the user does not provide cookie consent, without storing Local Storage and Cookies.

How does a Cookie-free Insider Tag work?

When a user visits your website, the Cookie-free Insider Tag initializes directly, and campaigns that meet the criteria are visible to your users. Until the user accepts marketing cookies, the Cookie-free Insider Tag will operate with restricted functionality. When the user consents, the Insider Tag replaces the Cookie-free Insider Tag, and the current flow continues. When the cookie acceptance status changes, the flow will change as well. For example, the Insider Tag will be replaced with the Cookie-free Insider Tag if an opted-in user rejects cookies or vice versa.

Flow 1 - Cookies are rejected

Assume a user visits your website, and a cookie bar appears to request their consent. Even if they take no action, the Cookie-free Insider Tag loads because you classify Insider Tag codes as essential cookies. Essential cookies are exempt from user consent, as they are necessary for the website's functionality. Once the Cookie-free Insider Tag loads, the user will be eligible to see campaigns. However, because they have not yet agreed to third-party tracking, no data will be stored in Local Storage, so you cannot measure how many users view campaigns or how they interact with them. For example, a user can see a “Back to Top” campaign when they scroll down or a “Hello Bar” campaign when they land on the category page if these campaigns are suitable for the Cookie-free Insider Tag. Still, you cannot track analytics for campaigns from opted-out users. The overall analytics refers only to data from users who accept cookies.

Flow 2 - Cookies are accepted

After visiting some pages, the user changes their mind and wants a personalized experience, so they accept cookies. The Insider Tag is loaded when they click the accept button. You can start tracking and storing data via Local Storage, retrieve unique statistical data, and display all eligible campaigns to the user.

What are the limitations of the Cookie-free Insider Tag?

  • Local Storage and Cookies will not be set, except for essential ones. Therefore, these users will not be tracked, and campaigns that require Local Storage to function will not be visible as long as users do not accept cookies.

  • Essential Local Storage will only be stored within the same session.

  • There will be no stickiness for the Cookie-free Insider Tag. This means users may see different variants of the same campaign across different sessions if they do not accept cookies.

  • Segmented campaigns will not be visible as long as users do not accept cookies.

  • User-based Recommendations will not be visible as long as users do not accept cookies.

  • Campaigns with multiple variants will not be visible through the Cookie-free Insider Tag if any of the variants are unsuitable.

  • Form data collected through Lead Collection campaigns will be sent to UCD and will be available in the “Export Collected Data” report, since the user intentionally submits the data through the form; however, the website will not identify the user until the user accepts cookies.

  • Campaign analytics data will not be collected as long as users do not accept cookies.
