FAQ about Mobile Segmentation

What is an event?

All button clicks and page visits where the customer integrates the Insider code are displayed as events on the segmentation screen. You can segment users by events, which are numerical values. You can create such segmentation under the Events category.

What is an attribute?

An attribute is the metric that includes users' information. Firstname, lastname, email, and last_visited_product are the most frequently used attribute metrics. The customer sends the attribute information to Insider. Attributes are under the Device Attributes and Custom Attributes categories on the segmentation screen.

How does Insider collect event and attribute metrics?

Insider collects this data through Mobile SDKs and APIs.

Can we create attribute segments based on value information, like null or not null?

Yes, you can use empty and non-empty conjunctions to create these segments.

Which metrics are in the device category?

The device category contains the metrics that are sent from the SDK by default. You do not need an extra event and attribute integration to get these metrics.

What is UDID?

UDID is a unique identifier that the system uses to track the users. This ID is different from the UDID of the device.

What is a device token?

A device token is a unique identifier that is defined for devices by Google and Apple to send push notifications. If a device doesn't give permission for push notifications, the device token isn't sent to Insider’s database. If a user gives permission to receive push notifications but the device token isn't available, the integration may be completed incorrectly.

Can we send an InApp to the devices that don't have the device token?

Yes, a device token is not required to send InApp messages.

What should we do if we don’t want to send any information about the users?

You can use the GDPR consent method in the Mobile SDK to change its status to passive for users who do not want to share any information. Then, the system does not collect any data for these users.

How is the location information in the segmentation obtained? How is it different from geofence?

The location information is based on the IP address the users use in their last session on the app. While the location is fully IP-based, the geofence is based on location and region.

Can we get the user's location information if they don’t permit the location?

Yes, the location information and geofence location permission are different concepts.

Location information refers to general data such as city, state, or country. It can often be derived from the user’s IP address, even if they have not granted specific location permissions.

Geofence location permission relates to precise device-level location tracking. This permission allows the app to access the user’s exact geographic coordinates to trigger geofence-based actions. If the user denies this permission, the app cannot access precise location data for geofencing purposes.

So, even if a user does not grant geofence location permission, general location information (like city, state, country) based on IP data can still be collected.

How accurate are the location segments?

The location segments are calculated based on the IP address. So, the reliability of this information depends on the reliability of the IP address that is sent to Insider.

Can we create town-based location segments?

No, the location segments can be city or country-based.

Why can’t I select the predictive segments on the panel?

The Predictive Segments option is activated for your account as per your contract. If you want to enable this additional paid feature, you can consult the Insider One team.

Can we segment and send a push to users who never opened the app?

No. For a user to be recognized by Insider, a session must be performed at least once in the application. Users who have never opened the application cannot be segmented because they do not yet exist in the Insider database, and therefore, no push notification can be sent to them. With the Onboarding segment, which can only be used in InApp and Content Optimizer, InApp or optimization can be shown to first-time users.
