Custom Goals

Prev Next

Custom goals are additional conversion actions you can add to a campaign to track performance beyond the three default goals (Purchases, Clicks, and Leads Collected). Default goals are automatically applied to every campaign and cannot be removed, while custom goals are optional and configured per campaign based on what you want to measure.

When to add a custom goal:

Add a custom goal when the default goals do not capture the specific action you want to attribute to a campaign. For example, if you want to track add-to-cart events, pageviews on a specific URL, or the performance of a specific product, you need a custom goal.

Primary Goal

When you add a custom goal to a campaign, you can designate it as the Primary Goal. The Primary Goal is the main conversion metric used to evaluate campaign performance. It is the goal that determines the winning variant in A/B tests and is the default metric displayed in campaign reporting.

Each campaign can have one Primary Goal. If no custom goal is set as the primary goal, the campaign reports against the default goals.

Add a custom goal to a campaign

You can add a custom goal either by creating a new one or by reusing an existing goal from another campaign.

Create a Custom Goal

If you want to add a new goal to the campaign:

  1. Click Create Goal to open the goal configuration panel.

  2. Set a name for your goal.

  3. Select one goal you want to track from the available Goal Types. Seven goal types are available: Pageviews, Clicks, Rules, Product Success, Product Category Success, Bounce, and Add to Cart.

  4. Fill in the required fields for the selected goal type.

  5. Select a Rule Match Type. The available options depend on the goal type selected:

    1. True / False: Used for Rules, Product Success, and Product Category Success goals. Select True to count the goal when the condition is met, False to count it when the condition is not met.

    2. Contains / Simple / Exact: Used for Pageviews goals. Contains targets a URL parameter, Simple targets the beginning of the URL, and Exact targets the full URL string.

  6. Save the goal. You can optionally set it as the Primary Goal at this step.

Add an Existing Goal:

If the goal you need has already been created for another campaign, you can reuse it instead of creating a new one.

  1. Click Add Existing Goal to open the dropdown.

  2. Search for and select the goal you want to add.

When the same goal is added to multiple campaigns, conversions are tracked independently per campaign. Adding an existing goal to a new campaign does not affect the conversion data of the original campaign.

To find all of your Custom Goals, navigate to Components > Onsite Goals > Goals page.

Filter Goals

You can filter your goals based on the Goal Types to find specific goals across your account. This is useful when managing a large number of custom goals across multiple campaigns.

Delete a Custom Goal

To delete a custom goal, click Delete next to it on the Goals page. Insider One will display a confirmation warning before deletion. If the goal is currently in use by an active campaign, you will also receive a warning indicating this before proceeding.

Deleting a goal that is in use will remove it from any campaigns it is currently attached to. Verify which campaigns use the goal before deleting it.
