Walkthrough: Boosting AOV with Cross-Sells

Complete-the-look styling is one of the most effective ways to increase Average Order Value (AOV) in fashion. Shoppers often need guidance when assembling an outfit, and showcasing coordinated items—such as matching shoes or accessories with a dress—encourages additional purchases.

In this walkthrough, we’ll demonstrate how to test two cross-sell strategies on a Product Detail Page (PDP).

  • One recommends shoes with dresses

  • The other recommends bags with dresses

1. Create your Recommendation Strategy

It's time to create your first recommendation strategy. Navigate to the Recommendation Strategies and click Create.

  1. Select your page type as Product Detail Page.

  2. Select your algorithm as Purchased Together to recommend suitable products for cross-selling.

  3. Enter the number of products you want to recommend.

  4. Exclude the recently purchased products in the last 4 weeks to keep your customer engaged.

  5. Add a filter for the category attribute to display recommendations from the “Shoes” category.

Then, create your second strategy that you want to test against.

  1. Select your page type as Product Detail Page.

  2. Select your algorithm as Purchased Together to recommend suitable products for cross-selling.

  3. Enter the number of products you want to recommend.

  4. Exclude the recently purchased products in the last 4 weeks to keep your customer engaged.

  5. Add a filter for the category attribute to display recommendations from the “Bags” category.

2. Launch your campaign

Now, launch your first campaign using your strategies.

  1. Go to the Web Smart Recommender page and click Create.

  2. Select your integration method for the widget.

  3. On the Segments step, pick the audience.

For this example, you can select customers with a low AOV under Purchasing Behavior and set your threshold.

  1. On the Rules step, decide where and when to show your campaign.

Use Page Rules to target the product detail pages of dress products.

  1. On the Design step:

Assign your two strategies to the variants.

Assign traffic allocation for each variant.

Now you’re ready to design your widget. Click Edit Design to open the Advanced Product Card Designer. Here, you can customize your product cards however you like.

Make sure all the attributes you want to display are included in your product catalog. If you need to show more information on your product cards, you can create custom attributes from Product Attributes page.

After finalizing your campaign design, the next step is to select the locales and stores where you want the campaign to appear.

Once your targeting is set:

  1. Review the campaign details.

  2. Confirm that all settings match your objectives.

  3. Click Launch to activate your first campaign.

3. Track your campaign metrics

You’ve launched your campaign—great work! Now it’s time to track how it’s performing.

  1. Go to the Smart Recommender Analytics page.

  2. Locate your campaign under the Campaign and Variant Metrics table. Once the experiment duration ends, click your campaign name.

  3. Compare key metrics, including Direct Revenue, Average Order Value (AOV), and Conversion Rate

You can see which product category—shoes or bags—led to higher AOV for low-spending customers.

If one variant is clearly winning, adjust the traffic allocation to 100%. This ensures the best-performing strategy receives all traffic and maximizes impact.

You can also test and compare additional cross-sell strategies by adjusting the rules and filters based on other product categories, such as pairing belts, scarves, or jackets across other clothing categories.

4. Optimize your campaigns

Once your campaigns are live and running, it’s time to review results and apply data-driven improvements.

  1. Go to the Smart Recommender Analytics page.

  2. Evaluate campaign performance based on engagement metrics.

  • Track Engagement Funnel Metrics: Understand how users interact with your recommendations at every step. View product impressions, clickthrough rate, add-to-cart rate, and conversion rate for each campaign to pinpoint where you’re driving engagement and where there’s room to improve.

  • Compare Campaign and Variant Performance: Use the Campaign and Variant Metrics table to review key KPIs like AOV, Conversion Rate, and Direct Revenue. Identify which strategies are delivering the best results and refine or scale your winning variant accordingly.

  • Analyze Product-Level Impact: Visit the Top 100 Product Analytics to see which products are performing well within your campaigns. Consider giving extra visibility to low-performing but strategic items by highlighting them in future recommendation widgets.

  • Review Category Trends: Use the Category Analytics view to assess which product categories drive the most conversions. You can prioritize high-performing categories to maximize conversions or spotlight underperforming categories to help boost their visibility and performance.

Use cases based on the page types

Home Page

Seasonal Picks

Showcase timely collections such as Spring Starters or Fall 2025. Ensure recommendations adapt to the season to stay relevant and engaging.

  • Create a strategy with the Most Popular algorithm to highlight top-viewed fashion products on your homepage.

  • Enable the “Enhance recommendations based on Attribute Affinity” toggle to personalize recommendations based on each customer’s style, color, or category preferences.

  • Add Season + is + Fall filter to your strategy to display popular fall items like boots, sweaters, or trench coats.

Add a custom “Season” attribute in Product Attributes and tag each item accordingly.

A/B test seasonal widget placements (e.g., above the fold vs. under the hero banner) or test seasonal imagery and copy like “Fall Must-Haves” vs. “Cozy Up This Season.”

Attract new users with Top Sellers

Guide new visitors by showcasing your top-selling products—items they might have noticed or encountered previously.

  • Create a strategy with the Top Sellers algorithm.

  • Filter by Category + is not one of + Accessories, Socks to prevent showing your low-price products on your homepage.

  • Set campaign segments for new users.

Recently Viewed Items

Re-engage returning shoppers with a visual reminder of the fashion items they previously explored.

  • Create a strategy with the Recently Viewed algorithm to resurface products that the shopper previously engaged with.

  • Exclude already purchased products to maximize conversion potential.

  • Set campaign segments for returning users.

A/B test Recently Viewed vs. User-Based algorithms to see which performs best in driving repeat visits and conversions.

Recently Viewed and User-Based are personalized algorithms that rely on a user's past behavior. To use them effectively, ensure your segments are set to returning users.

Product Detail Page

Real-Time Browsing Trends

Encourage exploration by showing what others typically view next—like boots after viewing a winter coat.

  • Choose the Real-Time User Engagement algorithm to suggest products frequently browsed after the current item.

  • Exclude recently purchased items to avoid redundancy.

  • Add an attention-grabbing headline like “Shoppers Also Checked Out” or “Pair It With These.”

Position this widget just below the product description to increase relevance without disrupting the product focus.

Complete the Look

Guide users to build complete outfits—e.g., showing shoes, bags, and jewelry with a featured dress.

  • Use the Purchased Together algorithm to recommend frequently bought accessories and complements.

  • Add filters: Category + is + Shoes, Bags, Jewelry, and optionally match by style or color attributes.

  • Add a rule to your campaign as Product Category + is + Dress to display recommendations specifically on your dress product pages.

Position this widget right above or below the “Add to Cart” button to catch shoppers before checkout. Try different widget headlines, such as “Styled Just for You” or “Complete Your Look,” to boost engagement.

More from This Brand or Style

Keep loyal shoppers engaged by showcasing other items in the same collection or from the same designer.

  • Use the Most Popular algorithm.

  • Add filters: Brand + matches the item they’re currently viewing item, OR Style + matches the item they’re currently viewing.

You can categorize your products by style by creating a custom attribute on the Product Attributes page and tagging each product with relevant styles like Boho, Underground, or Streetwear. Then, apply a filter to dynamically tailor your recommendations to match the selected style.

Use dynamic brand or style names in your widget titles, such as “More from Levi’s” or “Explore More Boho Picks.” You can also A/B test dynamic operators—such as brand vs. style—to see which one drives a higher CTR.

Category Page

Trending in This Category

Help users discover what's trending in their current category—such as dresses or boots.

  • Utilize the Trending Products algorithm to display the most engaging products within that category.

  • Add a Category + contains the item they’re currently viewing filter.

  • If your category type is hierarchical, enable the “Expand the category filter to include recommendations from the next category if there aren't enough products to display.” checkbox to make sure recommendations are shown even though there aren’t enough products to recommend from the category the user is visiting.

  • Enable the “Enhance recommendations based on Attribute Affinity” toggle to personalize recommendations based on your customer’s affinities.

Try adding trust-building copy, such as “Bestsellers This Week” or “Shop What’s Trending.”

Budget-Friendly Fashion Finds

Attract value-conscious shoppers by showcasing top-discounted items in the current category.

  • Use the Highest Discounted algorithm.

  • Add a Category + matches currently viewed category filter—e.g., show discounted coats on the coats page.

  • Keep Attribute Affinity off to focus purely on deals.

Add discount labels like “🔥 40% Off” or “Flash Sale” on product cards. Run A/B tests on placement (top vs. bottom of the category page) to find the best-performing layout.

Cart Page

Complete the Outfit

Upsell with last-minute essentials like tights, belts, or garment care products.

  • Use the Most Popular algorithm.

  • Filter: Category + is one of + Accessories, Underwear, Fashion Care, Jewelry.

  • Turn Affinity off to ensure practical relevance over personalization.

Use messaging like “Don’t Forget These Essentials” or “Top Off Your Look” to prompt quick add-ons. Test card size and position (above checkout CTA vs. below product list).

Boost to Free Shipping

Encourage upsells by showing fashion items that help customers hit the free shipping minimum.

  • Use the Checkout Recommendation algorithm and set your spend threshold (e.g., 100 USD).

  • No filters required; affinity is optional.

Add copy like “You’re 15 USD away from free shipping!”. If you don’t offer free shipping, consider testing Purchased Together to suggest commonly bought pairs (e.g., blouse + pants) and naturally increase cart value.
