# Standard Segments: Annual Occasions

The Annual Occasions segment targets users based on annual events such as birthdays, anniversaries, or other recurring dates. For example, you can send birthday or anniversary emails or SMS messages to show appreciation and strengthen relationships with your users.

You can segment users either by ignoring the year to make it annual or by filtering for an exact year if needed.

## Requirements

To use the Annual Occasions segment:

- At least one user must have the relevant date [attribute](/v1/docs/default-attributes) (e.g., birthday) filled in the correct format
- Select the Date Attribute from default or custom attributes

### Available operators

- is exactly
- is on
- is in the
- in between
- is empty
- is not empty

### Available Time Ranges

- today
- tomorrow
- this month
- ago
- later

## Example Use Case

If a user's birthday is August 19:

- **Today** operator → User enters the journey on August 19
- **This month** operator → User enters the journey on August 1
